Web Site: www.jugtownware.com E-Mail: jugtown@mindspring.com Bio Jugtown Pottery, a working pottery and an American Craft Shop since 1917, is located in a grove of trees and bamboo eight miles south of Seagrove, NC in the community of Westmoore. It is just off Busbee Road, a road named for Jacques and Juliana Busbee, the founders of Jugtown. Both artists, with a love of pottery, they began using the Jugtown stamp in 1922, which remains an identification of pieces made at Jugtown. Jugtown Pottery is owned by Vernon Owens; recipient of the NC Folk Heritage Award and the NEA National Heritage Fellowship. Vernon, along with his wife Pam, and son Travis are the main potters, while Bobby mixes clay and glazes the pots. The approach to pottery is form first, a simple continuous line, a complimentary glaze and occasional decoration. Form and firing, are the essence of these handmade pieces that are either wood or gas fired. Drawing from the tradition, you will find traditional jugs and candlesticks in wood fired salt glaze and frogskin, and tableware's in green, blue, brown and gray and vases, bowls, and jars in copper greens and reds. The shop includes Jugtown Pottery, jewelry made by Jennie Keatts at Jugtown, and fine American art and craft pieces. The Owens family has five generations of potters in their lineage. The shop and museum are opened Tuesday-Saturday 8:30-5:00.
